The Oakdale School
In an interview conducted in the late 1970s, Herbert Stooksbury talked about Lewis Hine's photographs of the Oakdale School. The Stooksbury family was the subject of many of Hine's photographs
Herbert Stooksbury: "They wanted something like Oakdale; they didn't want something that looked good. They wanted to show the worst side. They took pictures. Well, you've seen them. I know why they do it. You see, movies are made about the South. They'll be hillbillies and the rough people of the South, when you see the movies. And, well, people outside of the South were viewing this community here. If it had been all spic and span and beautiful buildings, well, it wouldn't have been interesting to anybody." --From TVA and the Dispossessed |
