University of California, Berkeley, California, April 25, 1940.
The University of California Lawn Forum, held Tuesday and Friday noons during the Spring Semester, was started this year by Edward Howden, one of the more liberal campus leaders. Modeled somewhat after the manner of the Town Hall of the Air, its object was to bring students together informally under the loose guidance of student speakers to discuss topics of current interest. An unexpectedly high percentage of the student body took an active interest in the forums. They not only demonstrated their interest by participating in the discussions between the audience and the speakers but they also gathered in small groups after the regular forum to continue the discussions, in many cases for an hour or more.
