The Lincoln Tunnel lets traffic flow between New Jersey and Manhattan, beneath the Hudson River. Its center tube, which was funded by the PWA, was completed in 1937. (The north tube followed in 1945, and the south tube in 1957.) It was designed by master engineer Othmar H. Ammann, one of the 20th century's greatest bridge designers. He also designed many of New York's magnificent bridges including the George Washington, Triborough, Bayonne, Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck, and Verrazano-Narrows Bridges. You'll find more photos of the Lincoln Tunnel during and after its construction in the New Deal Library.
