Description : Part of the crowd gathered on the campus of the Military School at Barnesville, Georgia, to hear President Roosevelt speak in 1938. Senator Russell, who acted as chairman of the meeting held to hear the President speak at the dedication of a new REA cooperative project in that area, attended the military school as a young man. Other speakers included Governor Rivers and John Carmody who was Rural Electrification Administrator at that time, 1938. Harry Hopkins was there as well as "Chip" Roberts. This was one of the Presidents' public attempts to purge Senator Walter George who also was present. He sat on the platform and shook hands with the President and said, after the President had said, " I'm sorry Walter, but I had to say it," " Mr. President, I accept your challenge." Lawrence (?), whose nomination for senator the President was supporting in the primaries of the real election in Georgia, also was present and had ridden out to the campus with him as I had done.
