Wheeler Dam's Downstream Face

Description : Wheeler Dam. A view of the downstream face of Wheeler Dam, Tennessee Valley Authority water control project on the Tennessee River, 15 and a half miles above Wilson Dam in northern Alabama. The two 45,000 horsepower, outdoor-type generating units may be seen in the powerhouse are in the right foreground. Outlines of this navigation lock are visible across the river. This project, completed late in 1936, helped keep water out of the swollen Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in the great flood in January 1937. It is 72 feet high and 6,052 feet long, with a reservoir area of about 64,300 acres reaching 74 miles upstream to Guntersville Dam. Listed Under:
