Norris Dam at Work

Norris Dam At Work -- Norris Dam, Tennessee Valley Authority water control project on
the Clinch River in northeast Tennessee, now does its part in flood control. The three steel
drum gates in the top of the spillway section are capable of raising the level of the reservoir
a total of 14 feet, representing about 500,000 acre-feet of water. When the reservoir reaches
the top of this barrier the lake will contain approximately 2,500,000 acre-feet. In January
1937 TVA engineers raised these gates to prevent water from reaching the already swollen Ohio
and Mississippi Rivers. This project, completed in 1936, is 265 feet high and 1,860 feet long
with a reservoir area of about 35,0000 acres. Listed Under:
