Description : Mattie May Maddox, Librarian of Carbon Hill Library. Library had about a hundred books on the shelves in a very dilapidated room over the bank. It is a WPA library and the book truck exchanges the books about every six weeks but so far leaves this very limited number of books. The library is not a large factor in community life--several people did not know where it was located. Mattie May had her schooling in Carbon Hill: "The majority of the readers in Carbon Hill want fiction--Zane Grey and Margaret Pedlar. Over three hundred books go out a month. If I had more books more people would use the library. I think Carbon Hill is hard to beat, but I'd like it better if I had a better job. Social life is lacking--there's nothing here to do."
