After WPA: Danner Lake
Location : Beaufort, SC
Description : Before and after the WPA Beautification program at Beaufort, S.C., on one side of North Street is the swamp which stretched far into the town before WPA turned a part of it into a lake with a rock paved bottom and sides, with a park surrounding the lake. WPA landscaped the grounds and planted many palmetto palm trees, oleander bushes and flower beds in the park. The former park had been named Danner Lake and the people of Beaufort have awakened to the possibilities of a greater and more attractive city through carrying on the beautification work which the WPA began. Beaufort people are proud of this WPA created lake and park which has aroused them from the sleepy indifferent attitude of a small waterfront town to a determination to make Beaufort into the most beautiful resort town on the South Atlantic coast.
