Museum Model: First Mountain Locomotive
Location : Denver, CO
Description : Model of the First Mountain Locomotive used on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in 1871 "The Montezuma" and baggage car and smoker. Assisted by advice from the master mechanic of the Rio Grande, WPA workers constructed the locomotive from a photograph. After the train had been installed, one of the engineers who operated this engine in the '70's came to Denver from another city and confirmed the correctness of detail. The baggage car is loaded with various pioneer articles including a churn and a wagon wheel. In it also is a post-office which holds stamped letters. Mining men in costume of that period are seen in the smoker. The scale in 1½ inches to the foot. No. 8, Transportation Series. Entire series, including back drops and curtains, were made by WPA Workers at the State Historical Society Museum at Denver, Colorado. Listed Under:
