Museum Model: Red River Cart
Location : Denver, CO
Description : Denver, Colorado, Model of the American Free Trapper and Canadian Voyageur on their way to summer rendezvous in the Rocky Mountains, with trade goods for the Indians (period 1830). The Red River cart, made entirely of wood, including the tires, and without the use of iron, was the first wheeled vehicle used in the Rocky Mountains Region. Bead work designs owned by the Colorado State Museum, were used as patterns for the bead work on the horse crupper and costume. To insure absolute accuracy, the United States Forest Service sent its most expert packer to the museum to tie the diamond hitches on these packs. The model, the back drop, and the case were made by WPA workers at the Colorado State Historical Society Museum at Denver. No. 2, Transportation Series. Listed Under:
