Museum Model: 1880 Wagon
Location : Denver, CO
Description : Ore wagon used in Central City Region of Colorado in 1880. The wagon was modeled after a wagon actually built in 1880 and located by a research worker at Idaho Springs. It was used in hauling ore from the famous California mine in Nevadaville, CO, now a ghost town. Exact measurements and drawings of this wagon were and reproduced in detail on a scale of 1½ inches to the foot. To secure correct posture of the horses descending the hill, a team of the required type was selected on a dairy ranch near Denver and the owner hitched this team to a heavy wagon and drove it up and down a similar grade for half and hour while the WPA project photographer photographed the action. The ore in the wagon is from the old North Star Mine at Central City, Colorado. No. 7, Transportation Series. State Historical Society Museum, Denver, Colorado. Listed Under:
