Description : A Mushroom-type andiron is being given its finishing touches by a WPA welder on the ornamental hardware project in Des Moines. At the right is one of the iron picnic ovens made from old oil barrels. 25 men are currently employed on the project under the supervision of G.E. Rhodes of Des Moines, an experienced ornamental hardware designer. 81 andirons have been made since July 5 at an average cost of $1.61. Retail prices for typical andirons would be approximately $50 per set, Rhodes declares. The picnic ovens cost the WPA about $3, but their retail value is placed at $15.
