Mrs. Cecelia Calder, 84

Description : Mrs. Cecilia Calder, 84 years old, living Kenny Presbyterian Home, 7100 47th Avenue Southwest, Seattle, Washington. In 1857 Mrs. Calder when four years old suffered an attack of Scarlet Fever which left her without hearing, and as she thought, silent forever. During the long years that followed as she grew into womanhood unable to attend school due to her affliction, and as the wife of a Presbyterian minister, she often wondered what it was like to talk and read as other folk. The answer to this question did not come until one year ago, when with the aid of Douglas O'Rouark, a WPA instructor in lip-reading and speech correcting, she began long hours of studying the peculiar movements of the lips made when they formed each letter of the alphabet. A few months after joining the WPA lip-reading class she posed for the photographers, and explained to them how after 84 years of age she rapidly learned to read. Listed Under:
