War Nursery: Service Around the Clock
Location : Williamsport, PA
Description : School starts before daylight for a pre-school age son of a war-working mother in Williamsport. She leaves him at the big home that was converted into a War Nursery Child Care Center. Lanham Act funds are available under Federal Works Agency allotment. For this young child and about 50 others in his age-range, there will be expert and supervisory care while mothers do the assembly line work free from anxiety over them. Many of these Child Care Centers have been operated by WPA and will be continued under federal grants in war-connected communities which resources or facilities to operate them on their own. In some localities of intensified war production the Centers will operate around the clock, seven days a week. Mothers or other adults pick up the children at ends of shifts. Listed Under:
