Description : Birthdays are occasions for celebrations in the Child Care Centers, and the Nurseries, where pre-school children pass the day while mothers are at work on war orders. This Scranton youngster has four candles on the cake which is to complete the noon-day meal of meat patties, baked potatoes, string beans, celery strips, wholewheat toast and butter. The WPA has operated three nursery schools in Scranton's public schools and one in a hospital. Lanham Act funds under Federal Works Agency allotments are now available for Child Care Centers for the youngsters of the war-working mothers, and dozens will be maintained in communities where population increases due to war industry have overtaxed existing resources. It is to this upstringing generation that we shall have to pass our world as the War leaves it, and the government is aware of its responsibility to these children.
