Description : PWA is financing the construction of the first subway system in Chicago, a 7.7 mile double tube system consisting of two routes, State Street (Route 1) and Deerborn Street (Route 2). Workmen mining on first bench in Clybourn Avenue section of State Street route. In this section, as in other outlying contract sections, the clay in mined with a "Chicago clay knife" that is pulled through the soil by a cable attached to an air motor.
