Mattress Making: Teasing the Moss
Location : Savannah, GA
Description : Negro women WPA workers at Savannah, GA "teasing the moss" to be used for mattresses with 315-pound Annie the biggest woman on WPA work in Savannah. These women "tease" the moss by pulling it apart and rubbing it between their hands to eliminate small sticks and other fibres. This is the Spanish moss found hanging from oak trees in the South which is used by WPA in Savannah for people on relief. As a result of this project, private upholstering firms and mattress manufacturers have begun to make use of this material and have learned to use it by studying the WPA Project. The result has been that WPA has developed a new type of industry for the South. Listed Under:
