Graduation for the Negro Adult Students

Description : The Education Division of the WPA of LA. In its drive against illiteracy started in 1934 has taught 75,181 illiterates out of a total of 219,000 to read and write and reduced illiteracy in the state about 32%. A recent campaign to stamp out illiteracy in three LA parishes, Lafayette, Tensas and Terrebonne resulted in 3,918 negroes and 624 white persons attending classes in the parishes. John Lee, 72, one of the oldest persons to attend the classes was awarded his "diploma" by State Superintendent of Education, T.H. Harris. John later explained the benefits of being able to read and write over the loud speaker at the graduation exercises held at St. Joseph Tensas parish, where 2200 negroes completed their literacy courses.
