Learning to Read the Bible

Description : Literacy Class - Virginia - Photo shows Frank Bethea, who entered the class in 1934 "because", as he put it, "he wanted to learn to read the Bible and to write his name legibly." Bethea preaches at the Pentecostal Church and sometimes has to leave early on Wednesday nights for that purpose. He is about 51 years of age and, in addition to his role of minister, which has been made doubly efficient by means of this class, he is an odd-job man. Bethea says that he has learned much about arithmetic, can estimate his pay on small jobs, and now he puts a small amount of his earnings in a postal savings account every week. Listed Under:
