Literacy Class, Buckingham County
Location : Buckingham County, VA
Description : Literacy Classes - Virginia - Photo shows a typical group of negro pupils in the literacy class taught by Hattie Hicks (standing in right of photograph). This little school, with a floor space of 25 x 60 feet, is located off the highway and, as you will see, is equipped in the most primitive manner. The teacher told me that one negro in this class works on the road from six in the morning to six at night, but regularly attends the class from eight to ten thirty. He was absolutely illiterate before enrolling. Deep Bottom Negro School in Buckingham County, a distance of sixty-two miles from Richmond, Virginia. Listed Under:
