Description : Air view of the John Marshall High School Athletic Field, Richmond Va., one of the outstanding achievements of the WPA in Virginia. The field, located on the site of a city block 463' x 274' (three acres) was formally dedicated May 17, 1938. It was sponsored by the School Board of the City of Richmond which, after clearing the site at a cost of $131,408, made sponsor's contributions to the WPA project amounting to $31,744, this amount being met with $35,024 in WPA funds. Equipped with every modern convenience for Physical Education, it will serve a student body of over 3,000, including a crack Cadet Corps. The playing field is 300' x 160' and, in addition to its use for all athletic events, will be used for all major drill activities of the Cadet Corps. The running track, 2300', can be used for drill purposes during wet weather. A field house (46' x 37' lower left) equipped with lockers, showers and toilets, is of reinforced concrete construction, as are six tiers of bleachers, and enclosing walls. The concrete bleachers will accommodate 1,100 persons, and portable bleachers will provide additional seating capacity of 2,100. Work was begun on the first WPA project in March, 1937. Fifty buildings had to be demolished and removed before the project got under way.
