Commemorative
Chairs, a special project
in the Campaign for the Roosevelt Legacy,
honors individuals who are in some way a part of Franklin
and Eleanor Roosevelt's enduring legacies. The chairs in
the auditorium of the new Henry A. Wallace Visitor and Education
Center are named for people who shared President and Mrs.
Roosevelt's vision for America and their role in international
affairs, as well as for more contemporary figures whose
lives embody the Roosevelt spirit.
Artists,
politicians, blue-collar workers, journalists, philanthropists,
labor leaders, Supreme Court justices, generals, doctors,
actors, diplomats, lawyers, educators, administrators,
immigrants, entrepreneurs, social activists, ordinary
people and nation-builders, Democrats and Republicans,
men and women - this campaign celebrates the ingenuity
and hard work of individuals who have contributed to and
been inspired by a legacy that embraces freedom, compassion,
human rights, and democracy.
Among the honorees are individuals
whose words, ideas, projects, sacrifices, and decisions
directly shaped the administration of one of America's
greatest presidents, and whose friendship and courage
sustained Mrs. Roosevelt during her travels as First Lady
of the World. Among them are contemporaries whose accomplishments
remind us that the Roosevelt legacy is very much alive
in the twenty-first century, and that it not only illuminates
the past but guides us towards a brighter future.
Take a seat, any seat, and you will
find yourself in the presence of greatness. |
