Evander Purchases W.P.A. Paintings

G.O. Enriches Art Collection by Donation
May 6, 1936

A number of paintings by young W.P.A. artists have been added to Evander's permanent art collection.

In an interview with Miss Bebarfeld, chairman of the art department, she explained that the government had not donated the pictures, but had merely allocated them to Evander. Allocation, she explained, is a redistribution of these government paintings to various public institutions such as museums, libraries and schools.

The Decorations Committee, consisting Of Miss Bebarfeld, chairman, Miss Thompson and Mr. Norton selected these paintings from a large variety. A nominal sum had to be paid for them, and through a donation of the General Organization, Evander has now a collection of fine, artistic works.

The pictures were chosen for their composition and originality. Among the collections, there are paintings in oils, water color and gouches. The teachers tried to get a variety of artistic expression so that Evanderites could get a cross section of various types of art. There are abstract drawings, realistic ones and a few are purely products of imagination.

Some of the works shown are by prominent American artists. Among them are Stuart Davis, outstanding exponent of abstract art, and Rifka Augie, who has just had some of her work exhibited in a professional art gallery. Miss Bebarfeld thinks that in this collection we have the embryo of future American artiste.
