Whither W.P.A.?
Last term there were 720 W.P.A. tutors in New York City, this term there are only 400. Last term there were 70 odd tutors in Evander, this term there are only 30. The Remedial-Tutorial Project is slowly losing ground for two reasons. First, there are other projects to overcome illiteracy in New York. Tutors have been transferred from the high schools to teach English to foreign Second, there is talk of concentration of subject units to increase the efficiency. This means that each high school will have tutors only in certain specified subjects. In Evander there will probably be English, French and Biology units. Hence, a person desiring tutoring in Mathematics would be out of luck. We are in favor of the retention of the W.P.A. staff in Evander because it has performed valuable service in the past, and will continue to do so. Regular faculty teachers who are obliged to teach classes of 35 and 40 students, find it impossible not to lose a certain percentage of pupils who unable to keep up with the required work. This is where the tutors can and do help. The keep records of each student's work and arrange for consultations with the teacher. They supplement the work of, but do not supplant, the regular instructor. Famous educators have stated the need for individual instruction, because of the individual differences found among students. Progressive education has found individual instruction to be necessary, and the W.P.A. tutors are aiming to attain this end. The Remedial Project should be made an integral part of the school system, and we protest any attempt at curtailment of the W.P.A. staff.
