Evening Program Attracts Many Evander Parents

November 23, 1938

On Wednesday evening, November 9, as a feature of Open School Week, Evander welcomed a large number of parents, alumni and friends to the dedication of its library murals. After viewing the murals, the guests adjourned to the Auditorium, where several representative speakers convened to pay tribute to the creator of the Library Murals, Mr. James Michael Newell.

Dr. Alpern opened the exercises by welcoming the guests to Evander. He then introduced Miss Florence Abramson 8-1, who, speaking on behalf of the student body, expressed "hearty thanks to Mr. Newell" for contributing to Evander such a "magnificent work of art". Mr. Louis Feinsteln, as President of the Evander Parent Association, then added the parents' thanks to those of the students and faculty for Mr. Newell's "beautiful murals." Director of the F.A.P., Mr. Holger Cahill, was next introduced by Dr. Alpern. Speaking interestingly and fluently, Mr. Cahill presented an illuminating discussion on the problems of "art as a popular commodity."

It was amid a burst of spontaneous applause that Mr. Newell rose to speak. Speaking regretfully of his departure from Evander, Mr. Newell said, "If you will get half as much pleasure out of the murals as I got out of painting them, I will be very happy." Miss Millicent Baum, representing ¢he Mayor, conveyed the Mayor's regrets that he was not able to attend the dedication. Several interludes were offered by Miss Ruth Kanerek 7-3, who sang "Gianniana Mia" and the "Florian's Song" and by Miss Frances Stern 3-58, whose song was "Danny Boy."
