The City

Eleanor Tanger
December 1934

The great city looms up like a gigantic boulder
With all the activity of the world seething thru it
People scurry like ants, in order to complete their tasks
Before dusk overtakes them.

The Empire State Building, a silver tower,
Sways above the sea of humanity,
With its prow-like head piercing the realm of mist,
Silent, mute, watchful.
Underneath this guardian of the city
Huge steel moles burrow beneath the surface of the earth
Carrying their human cargo to all parts of the metropolis
And overhead, buzzing thru the heavens like gigantic gnats
The transports of the air soar gracefully above the city.
