SHAW,,OREGON 1OCTOBER 1935, To MISTER PRESIDENT; Your letter of September 23d was addressed to all Clergymen - yet only hestiatingly I reply for - although I have been now 16 years in America and a citizen yet I was foreign born and that makes a world of difference, Ispent 20 yeras in India as MISSIONARYand no doubt it was a change to come to America, About that more later on , Now I am a rural pastor in the smallest country - parish with 136 souls in 30 miles territory, All farmers , and being a farmers pastor I must be excused if I burst at once into the matter and reply - more nostro , No 1, OUT here we are not interested about the old age pension - crippled children nor unemploiment insurance but one one THING we have against your Government that more and more our countryfarmers become mere PROLETarians, What is the backbone of a Nation ? is it not Agriculture and Foodstuff, An exempel ,, here is a farmer with 40 acres cultivated land ,,has 6 cows ,,hogs ,, chicken,, and the RED CROSS must help and feed this farmers family , Your Gorvernment spends teeming Millions and yet there is something rotten in the state of Denmark says the great Poet, We Americans malign Hitler yet his farmer's laws and hereditary laws gives the farmer astanding and a nobility and love for the soil he tilts, What does the cry "" back to the country mean ""? under our present conditions , In Europe if a farmer has 30 acres he can live and rear children ,How isit that there are no prices for our farm products ?, The consequenceis that we have a shifting wandering Farming Community ,, a farm is perhaps in TWO hands in 3 years , Why should the temporary incumbent bother to look after the soil and humus and fertilize if he be uncertain whether he can keep the farm or not, If matters go on like this in few years the earth will yield nothing and we better stop cultivation altogether , Methink our fine Minister of Agriculture should make special laws for those saucy big boys ,,Living in cities and having farmes in the country, First they do not know much about farming ,,then they only squeeze the rentner fellow ,In Germany a farmer who does not treat his soil scientiffically is declared incapax and loses the farm , Here again some capitalists play the roll of the Innocent , How the Dickens should our young farming people fall in love with the soil and their homesteads and make as it was and ought to be a FARMING ARISTOCRACY with a family history for a century ,,sic, Has the Government not enough Industrial trouble? will you knock out the bottom by allowing the farmer to sink and become a helot, No 2, MR PRESIDENT is not concerned about our individual woes and misery, But how to live in such a community ?, Of course I never get a cent of salary,,but I have Aschool and 4 Teaching SISTERS and only 136 souls, The SISTERS get only 300 $ annually but it is hard to bring that sum together ,No chance for making repaires for SCHOOL or Church or rectory, And then we rural pastors mush preach to the people ,, the Word of God Respect ,,obedience and submission to AUTHORITY and STATE,Social justice etc etc, Well ,,even here Christianity g like love goes through the stomach , No ,3, And when all is said another cancer and sickness in our whole American public and private life is - our HIGH-Living , And if we do not go back to a SIMPLE life America will see havoc, May I tell you a story MR,President , In the time of Pope Pius the NINTH when he still had his papal states it happened often that there was no more money in the States treasury , So the Pope assembled the Cardinals and asked for advice ,These Red ones could not help much , Among the can cardinals was also the famous Capuchin Missionary from Galla land in AF Africa , Now this Cardinal stood up and told the Pope ,, the only remedy I know to fill the treasury would be if you and all the Cardinals would ""vivere da CAPUCCINO, Eccolc a simple life , The only true Philosophe are in INDIA , The simple life ,, I as a white could live comfortably on 3 Dollars a MONTH, No, 4, Mr,President appealed also in y our letter to Religion , Now I talk as a Priest , You mentioned something about Crippled children, But what about our teeming 1000 of children of Do,, DIVORCEES, Our Divorce machinery through the whole of America by LAW established , With all you assiduity and earnstness to rule this great country how can you expect Mr President that God will assist you if you allow all the Divine and Natural laws to be broken , This constant daily provocation of Gods wrath and effontery will bring down GOD's vengeance on this fair Land ,And they talk about HIGH Society if the land is filled on with ,,, erobesco nomen , And then we should preach to the people ,, Respect to Government ,If the Government does not respect DIVINE AUTHORIRY why should our people respect earthly Authority , Nunc finis , I wonder in what hands this letter comes , I am sure it will never come in your hands Mr,President , But you 100 of clerks of male et feminini generis ,, if you had a heart you could help me , My Church wall inclines already 4 inches if a storm comes voila ,,ruina , If each of you would give me 50 cents, repaires could be made , I beg humble pardon if I have been the only beggar of all the Clergy. But to show my good will to you who handled this letter I send you a Mission card with my holy Band from India , With exquisite respects
