Home Photo Gallery Classroom Documents Right Honorable Sir: Since writing to you in reply to your recent letter making enquiry as to the working out of local relief I am again faced with a definite case in the parish which is illuminating and upon which I would ask your personal consideration. A man in my parish has been working for a Contractor on a gas shovel, widening the Erie Canal. He has had the job just two weeks when the State notified the Contractor that he could not use him. Upon enquiry he learned that the Contractor wished to keep him being "perfectly satisfied with his work" but the State said it was impossible as he was not on relief. After consulting the heads of the Relief Department he was told that nothing could be done for him as he had not been on relief before May. This man has a wife and four children and is well able to do a good day's work-- what is he to do? Thank you for the privilege of this personal contact, I remain, very respectfully yours,
C. Bertram Runnalls, Rector
