Letters From the Nation's Clergy

    Publishing Information

    President and Dear Sir:

  1. We are pleased to give you the desired information that you seek from us down in the South. No president has ever given the clergy such an opportunity to give first hand information concerning the condition of our people. We firmly believe that Almighty God has inspired you to inquire from us where the government can better serve our people.

  2. The condition among our people is deplorable. Men, women and children go to bed hungry, they do not have sufficient clothes nor fuel to keep warm during the winter. Due to the lack of employment, the living quarters are inadequate; we find families consisting of a husband, wife, and six children living in one room where they cook, eat, and sleep. The charitable institutions are crowded, as a result most of our people do not receive proper medical care.

  3. Since the major portion of the clergy are tax-payers and voters in New Orleans, and since we understand the conditions better than any other group, due to daily contact, we believe that if a few of our men were appointed to investigate and assist in checking these handicaps among our people, our government would be able to reach the masses more successfully.

  4. Believe us to be ready and willing to serve you for the betterment of conditions in general.

    Yours sincerely,

    Rev. T. B. Cooper
