Home Photo Gallery Classroom Documents Your Excellency the President Dear Sir: Your letter of Sep. 24th received, and contents noted with care. In reply, I shall endeavor to give you the condition of my community, and also the condition in our city just as it is at this time. First, I will give you the condition among my parishioners and community. In visiting my parishioners, I found out that the greatest need among then was, out of a membership of three hundred, the need of employment with a wage that will justify their needs. I found out that this was not only so among my parishioners, but was also true of the people of my community, not only is this true of my community, but also true throughout this city. There greatest need as I see it, judging from the condition of the people as a whole is that, permanent employment be given every unemployed man and woman, taking them off the dole that is sapping all of their manhood and womanhood, and give them a chance to earn by honest day labor, and honest day pay at useful work. If this is done, this country of ours would soon be back on a stable basis and everyone happy. Among the membership of my church, and also in my community, there are several hundred men working on public works projects under Government supervision. In this group we found out that men who worked nine days, ten days, or fifteen days per month, were only paid half the amount owed them, the other half was held back, and I was informed that they never did receive the balance of their pay. A large number only received one day's pay per week, for the last two months, the small amount of $2.10. You can see by this, the conditions that exist in my community and also throughout this city. In the last two or three months, the conditions have been very very bad. I have given you the condition of our community and city as a whole of the working class of people, and the only salvation for our Country as a whole is permanent employment for all men with useful work. This is the only solution for the betterment of the spiritual and material condition for the American people. Very respectfully yours,
Rev. O. C. Daigle
