Home Photo Gallery Classroom Documents Dear Mr. President: Thank you for your letter of September 23rd. May I say that in this community, which is in the West Side of Chicago, I have observed the following, during the last ten months: A slight decrease in the unemployment in the parish. However, this is offset by the fact that many are working for a bare subsistence wage. An increase in the general level of food prices of about fifteen percent. (3) No increase in the wages to take care of the increased food cost. An approximately ten percent increase in rents during the last twelve months. A decidedly better spirit prevailing in the community. You have our unqualified support in the new Social Security Legislation. You ask where we feel the government can better help the people of our community. Without doubt, you know that the Democratic Party of Chicago enjoys no savory reputation and we are still plagued with corrupt politicians instead of having statesmen. More than any other one thing, we need in Cook County, public officials who are beyond reproach. I remain Very faithfully yours,
Rev. John S. Higgins
