Home Photo Gallery Classroom Documents My Dear Mr. Roosevelt: In reply to your letter of September 24th, I wish to say that it was quite an agreeable surprise for me to hear from you. Your Social Security Legislation recently enacted, making provisions for the indigent is an ethical advancement towards ideal civic righteousness. It appears to me, your program not withstanding many encumbrances has been a "square deal" for every individual, most especially for the man that is farther down. And, now, Mr. Roosevelt! I wish to stress the most important needs of our group (Negroes) in this locality. We need a large religious, social, industrial and cultural center for Negroes on the south side. Our people need practical training in the most vital things that enter into their every day life which could be had through the establishment of such an institution. Many persons could be given useful employment in serving the community in this capacity. There are two available locations adequately suited for this purpose. They may be held for a reasonable appropriation. Trusting that this tentative suggestion will meet your approval and that I hear from you at your earliest convenience in regard to this matter, I am, Very respectfully yours,
H. B. Hawkins, Reverend
