Letters From the Nation's Clergy

    Publishing Information

    Dear Mr. President:

  1. After many observations, inquiries and conversations, I can reply very briefly to your kind letter of the 24th of September.

  2. 1. There is wide spread dissatisfaction with the policy of destruction of animals, and the curtailment of crops.

  3. 2. There is general discontent over the "relief work." It seems easier for the improvident, thriftless persons to secure aid, while the thrifty, proud, independent, but temporarily unfortunate find it difficult to get needed assistance because of a small "equity," or insurance kept for respectable interment at death.

  4. 3. Everybody seems to appreciate the "Old age security" as a principle; but feel that the condition that forces any person to confess himself a pauper to secure this relief, destroys moral, spirit and manhood. There is a general belief that legislation could be enacted that would give every person passing a certain age, a reasonable pension, enabling them to retire from active work, and make room for the many boys and men now cared for in the C.C.C. camps.

  5. 4. There is great fear among holders of securities over the "Holding Companies Legislation." No person with whom I have conversed seems to have any confidence that the Administration will be able to help the holder of a few shares of the stock, or small bond.

  6. 5. People dread the debt now being placed upon them by the Administration.

Earnestly hoping you may restore confidence in democratic rule, I am sincerely and cordially,

    John E. Miles, Minister
