Letters From the Nation's Clergy

    Publishing Information

    My dear Mr. President:

  1. Your letter of Sept. 24th, received. In answer I would state the following. First, I wish to commend the following things already accomplished by your administration, namely the establishment of the C.C.C. camps where many of our young men (my son among them) are able to find work and help support their families in this time of financial distress. I would mention also the many young men and women who are able to secure work and remain at Syracuse University and similar institutions who otherwise would have to return home and possibly forfeit a higher education. Again I would emphasize the college extension work which several members of my congregation have already made use of so they might continue their education. I have already seen the beneficial results of these agencies and trust that they may continue to function until the financial situation is more favorable.

  2. I am in hearty sympathy with your Social Security Legislation and also your Works Program both of which are sorely needed at this time.

  3. The industrial situation in Syracuse is bad as I am able to see it, due to the closing of two of the largest plants several years ago, and the mere existence wage paid to workers in some of the plants now in operation. I consider a higher wage absolutely necessary for the workers as I know them.

    Most sincerely yours,

    Edward M. Cullunan, Minister
