A Note About Assessment

If it is necessary to quantify the achievement of each individual, you might consider the following standards and strategies:

  1. Each item that is added to a chart should be annotated with the name of the student who suggested it. If more than one person comes up with the same item, list all the names.

  2. Each person who makes an addition to any chart must make sure the contribution is recorded accurately. If an item comes from more than one person, they should arrive at consensus before the item is recorded.

  3. A student's work should meet the following criteria:
    • The writing should reflect an understanding of the assignment.
    • The writing should incorporate relevant evidence in the form of facts, reasons, and/or explanations. The more relevant ideas a student has, the better.
    • The writing within each item should be well-organized and clear.
    • The mechanical skills should be correct (or there should be evidence of revision and proofreading).
    • If students are writing their own items, they should write neatly, respectful of their readers.
    • Students must work cooperatively with their peers.

You might assign a number of points for each of these items that would total one hundred. Each student might see the criteria beforehand, and them receive a critique listing the criteria and the students score so students might see where they scored well and where they need to improve. If you assign an essay, modify the criteria accordingly.
